The different specifications of the steel
Steel specifications vary from country to country and can be based on different criteria. For this reason, as the terms are closely related to the regulations of certain territories, the meaning may be different. It is therefore important to specify which specification refers to.
To give some examples, the European specifications are marked with the initials EN, those of the United States of America by ASTM or AISI, the Japanese by JIS. When European standards are preceded by the initials of the country’s regulatory body (for example UNI for Italy, DIN for Germany, FA for France etc.) they indicate the local translation of the European standard. The steels that follow international standards are regulated by ISO standards. As regards the United States of America, the regulations published by ASTM have been adopted. In many cases the dimensions, tolerances, limits and restrictions in the ASTM specifications are the same as those found in the product manuals defined by the AISI
In general, specifications tend to be defined within the terms of the chemical composition. They also indicate the corresponding mechanical properties that can be obtained. Finally, there are also other alternative criteria based on hardenability and mechanical properties that are used to define steels.
